Duties:

NOTE:

1.    WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday: 8:00AM - 4:30PM.

2.    Applicant's education and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board and Compensation Panel in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.  The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

3.    Relocation Expenses or Recruitment Incentive MAY be authorized for this position.  The Department of Veterans Affairs offers Permanent Change of Station (PCS) relocation services. Permanent Change of Station is the relocation of a household due to government convenience in connection with a transfer between duty stations or facilities. VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) is part of VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21), which includes facilities in California, Nevada and Hawaii. VAPAHCS consists of three inpatient divisions located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Livermore in addition to seven Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in San Jose, serving Santa Clara County; in Capitola, serving Santa Cruz County; in Monterey, serving Monterey and San Benito Counties; in Stockton, serving San Joaquin County; in Modesto, serving Stanislaus County; in Sonora, serving Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties; and in Fremont, serving Alameda County.  Additionally, there are four Vet Centers located in Redwood City, Santa Cruz, Modesto and San Jose. 

 

VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research.  Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. 

 

An affiliation with the world-renowned Stanford University School of Medicine provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties. Over 1,300 University residents, interns and students are trained each year.  VAPAHCS also enjoys approximately 175 affiliation agreements engaging over 125 separate institutions. Affiliation agreements cover a wide variety of programs, disciplines, and services.

 

VAPAHCS maintains one of the top three research programs in the VA with extensive research centers in geriatrics, mental health, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord regeneration, schizophrenia, Rehabilitation Research and Development Center, HIV research and a Health Economics Resource Center.  The team of researchers at VAPAHCS includes more than 180 principal investigators engaged in more than 640 ongoing projects, supporting both basic and clinical research efforts in the following areas: spinal cord injury, co-operative studies/clinical studies, diabetes, drug abuse, pain management, cancer, endocrinology, immunology, musculoskeletal, hypertension, dermatology, atherosclerosis, nephrology, bioterrorism, post traumatic stress disorder, hepatitis, ophthalmology, optometry, polytrauma, vision rehabilitation, and cardiology.  Research programs include: Stanford/VA Alzheimer’s Research Center, Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC), Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC), Rehabilitation Research and Development Center of Excellence on Mobility, HIV Studies, Health Economics and Research Center, Quality Enhancement Research Initiative Coordination Center, Program Evaluation and Resource Center, Cooperative Studies Program Coordinating Center, Center for Healthcare Evaluation, and Family Research Center.  

VAPAHCS also values Process Improvement and established an Office of Process Improvement (OPI) in Fiscal Year 2010.  The focus of OPI is to establish a structured means to prioritize and select Rapid Process Improvement Workshops projects which will serve to standardize and streamline processes to create a more efficient workforce.  Therefore, Process Improvement experience is also highly desirable as VAPAHCS looks to continuously innovate processes across the health care system.

The  position of Staff Psychiatrist located in Psychiatry Service, provides expertise in General Psychiatry in acute psychiatry and other medical inpatient and emergency room settings. The incumbent, who also serves as a staff physician reports directly to the Director of Inpatient Psychiatry or designee who in turn report directly to the Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health Operations, and is responsible for providing psychiatirc services to eligible veterans through the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The functional statement covers Psychiatrists located in the acute psychiatry inptient setting at the Palo Alto and Menlo Park Divisions of the VAPAHCS.

  • Qualifications & Evaluations
    • BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 

       

      1. Citizenship:  United States Citizenship. 
      2. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
      3. First-Year Residency (Internship). Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate’s acceptability for residency training.
      4. Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license as a physician in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
      5. Board Certification:  Board certified/eligible in Psychiatry.
      6. Physical Requirements: Pre-Employment physical and drug screening required.
      7. English Language Proficiency:  Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by Title 38, United States Code (38 U.S.C.).
      8. Qualifications: To be eligible to apply for core privileges in Psychiatry, the following criteria must be met;  Current certification or active participation in the examination process leading to certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry; OR, successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or American Osteopathic Association accredited post-graduate traning program in psychiatry; OR, be grandfather in from previous experience, AND, applicants for initial appointment must be able to demonstrate the provision of inpatient, outpatient, or consultative services for at least 200 patients during the past 12 months, or demonstrate successful completion of a hospital-affiliated accredited residency, special clinical fellowship or research.

       

      PSYCHIATRY CORE PRIVILEGES - Admit, evaluate, diagnose, treat, provide consultation and perform history and physical examinations to adult patients presenting with mental, behavioral, addictive or emotional disorders, utilizing all forms of psychological and social treatment including medications.  Privileges include providing consultation with physicians in other fields regarding mental, behavioral or emotional disorders, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, family therapy, behavior modification, consultation to the courts, and emergency psychiatry as well as the ordering of diagnostic, laboratory test, and prescribe medications.
